... biography ...
Jura Nanuk began his work as a photographer in his native Croatia, working for several daily newspapers and magazines. During the war in former Yugoslavia, he was chief photographer for the Reuters News Agency in Croatia, covering Europe's most violent conflict since the World War II.After five years as a war photographer, he moved to Budapest with his family. Nanuk decided to change the focus of his work from witnessing destruction to using photography as a means of increasing the understanding between different cultures, nations and religions. He recently published his first book, The Colors of China, the first in a series of photographic journeys through various countries that Nanuk wishes to document, promoting a vision of tolerance among people.
"I originally wanted to portray a picture of modern China, but I was overwhelmed by the magnificence of its ancient culture," says Nanuk of his recent project. "I soon realized that in order to understand China today, you must first try to understand its religious and philosophical background. "
The result is curious mix of images ranging from ancient religious monuments to skyscrapers in major metropolitan areas. The photographs depict multifaceted China, growing at a rapid pace though still firmly rooted in its tradition.
Nanuk was also the founding photo-editor of the Budapest-based magazine DT - Diplomacy and Trade and is the former photo-editor of the American Chamber of Commerce magazine, Business Hungary.
