Nigeria:
The Abuja Carnival
...
an ontheglobe.com country awareness project ...
CELEBRATING CULTURE IN NIGERIA
In November of 2005, the team at ontheglobe.com
was sponsored by the Embassy of Nigeria in Hungary, in collaboration
with the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, to undertake a country
awareness mission in the most populous sub-Saharan African country of
Nigeria.
As part of the mission, ontheglobe.com took part in the first Abuja
Carnival 2005 in the Nigerian capital between 24-27 November. The Abuja
Carnival was an important event for the country, as it celebrated the
true diversity of the country that constitutes over 140 million inhabitants,
hundreds of tribes, ethnic groups and languages.
Travel
journalist Andrew Princz and photographer Jura Nanuk traveled to Abuja
and witnessed a true cultural feast. A majestic Durbar ceremony undertaken
by the Northern Emirates, a masquerade fiesta, A boat regatta, traditional
dance, music and textiles.
"This was a very important step for the country," said Princz
upon his return from Abuja, "The Abuja Carnival has shown that
the many rich local traditions which in many African countries are dying
or becoming forgotten, are being celebrated in Nigeria."
"Nigeria
has recognized the great value in this country's cultural mosaic, and
it will be rewarded in its efforts to promote the tourism opportunities
as a result," he added.
As
a result of the mission, ontheglobe.com hopes to undertake business
cocktails in Budapest, and subsequently in other world capitals, to
raise awareness and discover business and tourism opportunities for
Nigeria in the context of the Abuja Carnival.
ontheglobe.com plans to bring together influential individuals from
the political, business and diplomatic communities in order to promote
the cultural values of the Abuja Carnival for future years. ontheglobe.com
wishes to foster friendships, business opportunities between Nigeria
and the countries of the world, and would like to share our knowledge
about the cultural traditions of Nigeria with the world
